Pelikan Toledo M700

The adds a slightly smaller variation to the exquisite Toledo range. The name comes from the Spanish city famous for its continued use of the ornamentation technique know as Damascus patterning, brought to Spain by Arab settlers thousands of years ago and perfected over the centuries. Thin gold film is pressed onto barrels formed from a single piece of 925 sterling silver which are then engraved by hand, giving each motif a life of its own.

Pelikan adopted the Damascus patterning technique for the Toleda in 1931 and continue to manufacture them in Germany. Due to the complexity and craftsmanship required only 50 can be made per month. With the “Toledo” fountain pen, Pelikan pays tribute to this technique with a love of detail.

The artistic work of Damascus steel dates back thousands of years. First, a pattern is engraved on the surface of a steel or iron object. A thin sheet of gold is then placed over the motif and incorporated into the motif with a small hammer. Heat the object to 800 degrees so you can see the new built-in motif. In this way, the surface of the steel oxidizes and turns black and the gold will begin to shine brightly. This technique was brought to Spain by the Arabs and has been perfected for centuries, especially in the famous Spanish city of Toledo.

In the year 1931 Pelikan adopted this technique for the Toledo model with so much success that the design has remained virtually unchanged over the years.
Since then, the basic design of the Toledo hasn't changed. The biggest highlight of this edition is the decorative sleeve. Several elaborate steps are necessary to refine the detailed pelican motif on the barrel. The special pelican motif is refined by hand by a goldsmith with many expressive details, so that the very individual expression gives the writing instrument its vibrancy. Two pelican motifs can be seen on the surrounding 925 sterling silver sleeve: a small pelican stands together in front of a pelican with widened wings and the second motif shows a pelican with an open beak. Both motifs are framed by ornaments. During the manufacturing process, the design is etched onto the sleeve and then the filigree details are stitched by hand. Finally, the surface of the barrel is coated with palladium. Finely worked in more than 300 single steps, testifying to dedication, precision and perfection.
